Notes From the Midnight Driver
by Jordan Sonnenblick

Life is difficult for sixteen-year old Alex.  His parents are separated and his father is dating his former third-grade teacher.  Alex gets himself into trouble with the law and is ordered to do community service at a senior center.  He is assigned to Solomon Lewis, an extremely difficult senior who is filled with advice.  Alex and Solomon learn to understand one another and find common ground through life-changing experiences.

Schlup Scoop - Despite the fact that Alex gets in trouble for drunk driving, I still think this book is an appropriate read aloud for  students as young as sixth-grade. Notes From a Midnight Driver is humorous, entertaining, and inspirational.

Stand Tall by Joan Bauer

Tree is six foot three-and-a-half inches tall and still growing. He has never fit in at school.  Additionally, his parents have divorced and he feels as if he no longer fits in at home.  His grandfather has recently had part of his leg amputated and, with Tree's help, must learn to walk again.  With his grandfather and new friend Sophie's support, Tree realizes that he can stand tall and be himself.  An inspirational story about accepting and loving yourself.

Fallout by Todd Strasser

It's the summer of 1962 and Scott's dad prepares for the inevitable.  The neighbors ridicule as Scott's father builds a bomb shelter that could hold four people for two weeks.  In the middle of an October night, the unthinkable happens.  But, before Scott's dad can shut the door, the neighbors force themselves into the shelter.  There isn't enough room, air, or food.  Eye-opening and remarkably written, this novel will have you wondering and questioning...What will happen?

  1. Hey Maria - This is a new title for me, so I look forward to reading it. As I look at your summary, it sounds like there could be some fabulous discussion with students such as when do we look out for our own needs and when do we look out for other people's needs…or do we always do both? Thanks for exposing me to a new title. It's now on my "to read" list.
